About ten minutes on foot from the Hotel Volney Opéra, in a lively district that is home to many theatres and performance halls, the Café Oscar has become a real institution. The first Comedy Club in Paris, the Café Oscar has seen the greatest names in humour take their first steps on its stage during the thirty years of its existence. Discover this venue brimming with good humour and conviviality.
The Café Oscar, its history and stars
The history of the Café Oscar is inseparable from that of its owner Monika, who came from Poland to learn French and then fell in love with a restaurant hidden away in a courtyard. She bought it and created a Comedy Club like the one her father had in Warsaw during the Soviet era. Inviting beginner comedians to gain experience in front of a live audience, she launched the careers of stand-up stars such as Verino, Blanche Gardin, Artus, Paul Mirabel and Nawell Madani.
A unique ambiance
Remember to book your place on the comfortable red velvet banquettes as this intimate venue only accommodates 50 people each evening. The show is free, and the performers are paid from the passed-around hat. Behind her bar, Monika mixes cocktails and offers soft drinks, beer and wines. During open mic evenings, it falls to the audience to choose who will return to the stage on upcoming evenings. Go along and you just might be among the first to laugh at the comedic genius of an upcoming Florence Foresti or the new Mathieu Madénian!
Around the Hotel Volney Opéra, you will find various performance halls offering a diversity of entertainment. From the Opéra Garnier to the Café Oscar, from the Bouffes Parisiens to the Théâtre des Nouveaux, it's up to you to choose how to enchant your evening!
