An exceptional place and superb collections
The Musée de la Vie Romantique is intimately linked to the Dutch-French romantic painter Ary Scheffer. In 1830, he settled in this rapidly expanding district and created the glass-roofed studios which today serve as an exhibition space. Welcomed within its walls were prominent personalities such as Liszt, Chopin, Rossini, Dickens, Delacroix and more. Scheffer’s descendants maintained this tradition until the 1960s. In the museum, you can admire paintings by Scheffer and many of his contemporaries. From portraits of George Sand and Victor Hugo to mythological scenes, sculptures, and a cast of Chopin’s hand, the richness and diversity of the collections are astonishing.
An extra attraction for late summer
Until September 4th, you can also discover the temporary exhibition entitled Romantic Heroines. Thanks to a selection of around a hundred works, the visitor is introduced to perceptions of female heroism, often tragic, through art, literature and theatre.
